Countywide livestock vaccination campaign launched in Mandera
The initiative aims to protect the livelihoods of pastoral communities and enhance resilience against frequent disease outbreaks among livestock.
The Emergency Locust Response Project (ELRP) and the Food System Resilience Project (FSRP) have initiated a countywide livestock vaccination campaign across all sub-counties of Mandera.
Veterinary officers will conduct critical activities including the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccination, deworming, and vector control measures such as spraying livestock to protect against ticks and biting flies.
The initiative launched last week aims to protect the livelihoods of pastoral communities and enhance resilience against frequent disease outbreaks among livestock.
The veterinary officers are also educating the public on infection prevention measures against zoonotic diseases.
Rashid Ochola, the veterinary officer for Mandera West Sub-county, urged the community to vaccinate their animals to reduce disease prevalence.
"I am looking forward to vaccinating at least 1,000 livestock in the coming days, only in Mandera West," the doctor said in an interview on Monday.
Mohamed Adan, a resident of Arda Hagarsu/Sotowa Oro in Mandera West, expressed gratitude for the project, noting it would save many livestock in the villages.
"Our remaining animals will be saved from prevailing diseases, as most of our animals were killed by the rains," he said.
The vaccines have an immediate impact on livestock, especially as most of them were affected by the El Niño rains.
